Hey Sugar Mamas!
We’re continuing our Black History Month celebration by shining a light on more incredible Black women-owned businesses in our community. This week, three Sugar Mamas share their journeys, challenges, and advice for fellow women in business.
Stay tuned each Friday in February (and early March) for more inspiring stories!
Let’s dive into this week’s features. 👇
A: One of the main things that I continue to face and overcome is the Imposter Syndrome. Challenging thoughts of “who do you think you are” or the possibility of non-acceptance because of the color of my skin.
A: Follow your instincts. Consistency is key. Don’t give up and keep moving forward, even if it seems impossible keep moving forward. Surround yourself with like-minded women in business. And remember why you started, what ignited you to start and keep moving forward.
A: I am the Founder and Creative Director for Winston Salem Fashion Week and Executive Director for Audacity Productions of NC. We cultivate a community of aspiring designers in the southern regions by providing a platform for them to present their brands before a sophisticated audience. We provide mentorship and connections for designers looking to gain exposure to primary industry platforms.
A: One of the biggest hurdles I faced was community support needed to expand my programs. As a Black woman entrepreneur, I’ve sometimes had to work twice as hard to prove the value of my vision. There were moments when potential partners challenged my capabilities or questioned my mission because it was rooted in faith-based principles. However, staying true to my purpose and consistently demonstrating the quality of care and education we provide helped me break through those barriers. By building a strong reputation in the community and showcasing success, I’ve been able to overcome doubt, fears, and grow my childcare centers sustainably.
A: Stay rooted in your “why.” Whether your motivation is faith, family, or a calling you’ve felt your entire life, let that sense of purpose guide your decisions and help you push through difficult times. Which means surrounding yourself with a network of mentors, peers, and supporters who believe in your vision. Never underestimate the power of consistent communication—tell your story authentically, celebrate your milestones, and don’t be afraid to ask for help or guidance when needed.
A: At Church Childcare Center, Inc., and Church Childcare Plus, we provide a nurturing, faith-focused learning environment where children can grow academically, socially, and spiritually. Our mission is to support working families by offering quality childcare that instills positive values, encourages curiosity, and fosters a love for learning. What makes us unique is our commitment to blending educational excellence with a strong sense of community and faith-based principles. We believe that by partnering with parents and local organizations, we can help each child develop the confidence and character they need to thrive in every area of life.
A: As a proud stay-at-home mom to very young kids, I’ve struggled to balance start-up time, childcare, and housework. In this season of life, I often needed to bring my kids along to small business training sessions, making every step of the journey both rewarding and challenging.
A: Get multiple mentors to guide your small business growth. Take advantage of free or discounted services whenever possible. If some resources are unaffordable, consider selling items on Facebook Marketplace or connecting with others to take on small jobs that can fund your dreams.
A: Did you know the wrong color can make your skin look dull, but the right one can make you glow?
